Under the Education Act, 1998 students are to be assisted when setting up a student council.
The purpose is defined as ‘A student council shall promote the interests of the school and the involvement of students in the affairs of the school, in co-operation with the board, parents and teachers’.
Our student council exists as a democratic student voice within our school, ensuring that our students are being heard in accordance with the UN Declaration on the Rights of the Child.
Our student council elections are open, democratic and transparent. Students are elected by their peers, with each form class electing a representative and deputy.
Student council meetings take place at least once for month, with the Principal often in attendance. A annual presentation is made to the Board of Management and representatives of our council attend the annual Donegal Youth Council conference in order to connect with student councils around the county.
Recent issues that the student council have worked on have included, the installation of water fountains in the school, consultation and organisation around a new school fleece and the development of a pedestrian crossing adjacent to the school.
